Fairy Godmother

Today, I feel like a Fairy Godmother.

Very keen for dinner time!

Very keen for dinner time!

Remember that cat I took in who had been hit by a car? Three anaesthetics and a month later and he’s a normal cat, except for one lump (a haematoma that will shrink) and slightly crooked front teeth. He was eating normally, bright and active. Probably too active for a person living alone who comes home utterly beat after doing what often turns out to be an eleven hour day. As such, his original owners (who loved him very much, but other life circumstances meant they wouldn’t have been able to syringe feed him at the time) received a phone call on Wednesday informing them that we was a normal cat once more and just wondering if they had room for a cat in their life again.

Turns out my little cat had a buddy back home. A young kid about waist high that probably wasn’t even in pre-school yet, who had grown up with this cat, he slept in his bed at night, and had been asking for days when the cat was coming home, and then why he wasn’t coming back.

Kid, you were sound asleep in your dad’s arms when you came to pick up your beloved cat on Friday, so we never met. It was still very nice to see you clutching a box of chocolates in one hand and a mousie toy in the other. My name is Dr Ferox and today, I am granting your dearest wish and sending your cat back home. Today, I am your Fairy Godmother. I hope this cat is with you for many more years and that your time with him will be cherished for the rest of your life.

Cats like him are very rare, and come along perhaps once in a lifetime. He reminded me very much of the cat I grew up with, the one that made me want to be a vet. They are so similar in behavior that a small part of my heart wonders if perhaps he is her second life. (Or third, or eighth, or whatever that particular soul is up to.) I hope your Daddy tells you the story of this cat of yours, and that you appreciate him every day.

And if one day, in a few decades time, this special cat convinces you that you would like to be a vet (as my cat convinced me), I’d welcome you to the profession, because I know you will have heart.

And if you don’t, I will sleep easy knowing that he is in a family that loves him, and after a cat like him you will have no choice but to be a cat-person for the rest of your life.

Take care of him, I really hope you do.

Appreciated, but it's hardly a profitable way to get chocolate

That little boy getting his kitty back is one of life’s small miracles. Thank you for being there to help it happen.
